Long time illustrator, webtoon artist, and game designer Lucian Chung shares his story and tips as an illustrator. Recently he has launched the mobile game\u00a0<\/em>Mr. Missile<\/em><\/a>, operating as the business partner, pixel animator, and artist. Can you introduce yourself and\u00a0your work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“My\u00a0full name is Lucian Roy Chung.\u00a0<\/span>I like to create things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, I worked on a mobile game with a programmer friend. \u00a0<\/span>I created all the graphics with frame by frame animations through Photoshop. It is similar to\u00a0old school 2D animations, where\u00a0they make a\u00a0new sheet of paper for each frame of motion, I created a new image for each frame of the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also do a web comic called \u201cBunk & Folly<\/a>\u201d. I started with\u00a0traditional drawing + digital coloring, but now I\u2019ve been doing it completely digitally on Photoshop.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve done illustrations for magazines, a digital children\u2019s book, and various commissions (freelance work).\u00a0T<\/span>hey are mostly character illustrations.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you go into how you started drawing?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

“If you look at most kids in kindergarten they actually all love drawing. In fact, lot of kids love drawing- and for whatever reason- some kids stick with it and some don\u2019t. I was one who stuck with it. <\/span><\/p>\n

In high school, I noticed my friends went onto other things while I was still reading and\u00a0drawing my own comics in my spare time. I ended up majoring in illustration in university, and as an adult it\u2019s something I still enjoy very much.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do you post your work digitally? What are some digital platforms you suggest for users to post their work?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m using two different platforms. One is called \u201c<\/span>Webtoon<\/b><\/a>\u201d, which is made from the\u00a0Line Corporation<\/a>\u00a0in Japan, and the other one is called \u201c<\/span>Tapastic<\/b><\/a>\u201d. Both of these are platforms are specifically for web comics. Anyone can upload their work for free and maintain the copyright for their work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI also have an Instagram<\/a><\/strong> dedicated just to my art. I get better reach on Instagram than on Facebook<\/a><\/strong>, because there are fellow artists and art lovers who also follow and like my work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the general process for your artwork?<\/b><\/p>\n

Conceptual Stage:\u00a0<\/strong>Thinking of ideas, loosely sketching ideas<\/p>\n

Thumbnails \/ Loose drawings:\u00a0<\/strong>Draw small, rough versions of the overall image with composition + placement<\/p>\n

Tighter pencils:\u00a0<\/strong>Start drawing for the final image at full size, fine-tune perspectives and proportions<\/p>\n

Inking stage:\u00a0<\/strong>Go over pencil lines with pen and ink brush (traditional) or pen tool (Photoshop)<\/p>\n

Color:\u00a0<\/strong>Fill in color digitally on Photoshop<\/p>\n

“I really value technical skill. I think for an artist this is the foundation. Sure, artists want to express themselves, but in order to make it worth other people\u2019s time, there should something attractive about it.<\/p>\n

With that being said, I also really believe in people expressing something very original and unique. Sometimes you\u2019ll find someone who is really strong technically, but if they\u2019re just copying or reproducing other people\u2019s work, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s very powerful. People should try to both cultivate technical skills and also express something that is personal, unique, and in their own voice.”<\/p>\n
